Parliamentary Education Office in Canberra to visit Sydney in 2018

Andrew Back (Parliamentary Educator from Parliament of Australia in Canberra) has written to EBE NSW about the Parliamentary Education Office visiting Sydney in 2018. There are opportunities for incursions and teacher professional development sessions.

Copy of letter from Andrew Back, Parliamentary Education Officer - Parliament of Australia  (received by EBE NSW on 22 February 2018)

Parliamentary Education Office

Dear Economics and Business Educators members,
My name is Andrew Back and I work for the Parliamentary Education Office (PEO) in Parliament House, Canberra.
The PEO provides a range of resources to students and teachers to help them better understand the Australian Parliament and engage with it. To date, over 2.1 million students have undertaken a PEO program.
Guided by the Australian Curriculum, the PEO also produces education materials for teachers to deliver civics education in their own classroom, and help ensure new teachers feel confident and properly equipped in this area.
The PEO will be visiting schools in the electorate of Chifley from 6-10th August, covering the area between Ropes Crossing, Riverstone, Arndell Park and Mount Druitt. We plan to visit schools to deliver programs to students, but also to provide support and resources, such as professional development sessions for teachers.
We would be interested in hearing from any teachers or educational networks who would like to work with us during our visit. The programs we could provide for you include:

  • A visit to your school to engage students in practical parliamentary programs,
  • A visit to your school to provide professional development for interested teachers, including teachers from other schools where suitable.
  • A meeting with any other professional teaching network or organisation who may be interested in pursuing the potential for future working partnerships.

We are flexible and can adapt these programs to suit you requirements. We are also able to offer these programs throughout the year via videoconferencing should you be unable to avail yourself of a program during our visit.
Please contact me if you have any questions, or would like to book a program.
Yours faithfully,

Andrew Back

2018 ASX Schools Sharemarket Game (Game 1 begins on 8 March 2018)

While you teach your students about investing and the Sharemarket, they can put into practice what they are learning by playing the Sharemarket Game. Students receive a virtual $50,000 they can invest over a 10 week period, in 200 companies listed on the ASX. The prices students buy and sell at are the same prices as they would get in the live market so this is as close to real life share trading as you can get.

As a result of playing the Game your students will:

  • Develop their knowledge of the sharemarket
  • Learn how to research companies
  • Discover the importance of wise investment decisions
  • Gain a greater knowledge of economic and world events
  • Begin to learn more about investing which is beneficial for their future.

>> Registrations now open open for Game 1 - 2018
>> Game 1 dates: 8 March 2018 - 16 May 2018

There are teacher lesson plans and resources available once you register for the Game.

>> View "ASX Schools Sharemarket Game - How teachers integrate the Game into their lessons"

There are reports about past winners (including strategies they used when playing the game)  in past editions of The EBE Journal - Journal of the Economics and Business Educators NSW. Economics and Business Educators NSW members can access the journals through the members section of the EBE NSW website.
